Cory Doctorow is a Canadian science fiction author, blogger, and journalist who serves as co-editor of Boing Boing. He has worked toward the liberalization of copyright laws and supports the Creative Commons organization, using some of their licenses for his books. He has been named a Fellow of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, and is a former Fulbright Chair in Public Diplomacy at USC.

Among Mr. Doctorow's more notable works include Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom, Little Brother, The Complete Idiot's Guide to Publishing Science Fiction (as co-author), and his most recent novel, For the Win, which is available both as a free download on his website as well as a print edition from Tor Books.

Mr. Doctorow was a two-time winner of the Sunburst Award, winner of the Campbell Award for best new writer, The John W. Campbell Memorial Award, the Locus Award for Best First Novel, the Prometheus Award, and the Electronic Frontier Foundation Pioneer Award.  He has also served as Canadian Regional Director of SFWA, and was a featured guest of the 2003 World Science Fiction Convention in Toronto.

A fictionalized version of Cory Doctorow occasionally appears in the webcomic XKCD, wearing a red cape and goggles, and living in a hot-air balloon up in the "Blogosphere", "above the tag clouds".  When he won the 2007 EFF Pioneer Award, he was presented with a red cape, goggles, and a balloon

You can find out more about Cory at his website and blog, craphound.com.

We are pleased to have Cory Doctorow join us at Philcon 2011, along with our Artist Guests of Honor, Boris Vallejo and Julie Bell, and our Special Guest, singer/songwriter S.J. Is there an organized repository anywhere for people to upload photographs and other media for Philcon? I have an album and a video (of that Beagle dude) on Facebook, but I couldn't find much (two small album's other than my own) there, and a search on Photobucket and Flickr didn't reveal anything recent. I know it takes a while for people to put up their shots, but I just wanted to know if there's some place where folks can be guided to put them when they have them ready.

Nov. 18th, 2010 @ 01:02 pm Last minute roomiehuntery
If you're looking for a room to share in this weekend, my room has a couple of spaces free. Send me a message and I'll give you the details. You can contact me via my gmail account (jcholewa@) or on facebook. Other contact info is in my profile if you want to look it up. It's going to be a great weekend, but it'll be greater if all of us have more petty cash for the vendors! :D

If you decide later to take me up on the idea, I will probably post about it on the backside of Filthy Pierre's party board, if it's set up this year.

Anyway, happy con! :)

Nov. 9th, 2010 @ 01:41 pm Schedules?
Have the schedules gone out yet to panelists for Philcon?

The convention is ten days away and I would like to have some idea what I should be preparing to speak about on panels, if I have been selected for any panels.

Thanks in advance of your prompt reply.

Howdy Friends

I'm here with some great news about the hotel reservation process (other than that it is up and running with codes for Party Floor (PHL) and non-party Floor (PHI))

There has been a drop in the rates! The new rate is $119. This is the rate that you will be charged at the hotel, If you have paid previously, your rate will be adjusted down to the new rate, you. We are working on a more elegant solution to that, the new rates will be posted on the website soon. The important thing is that you get your reservation in as early as possible to ensure that the Hotel Gods look favorably upon us in the future :-)

Of course I would advise getting your Philcon 2010 membership as well to complete the set. All the wonderfulness starts at http://www.philcon.org.

Take Care

Here is the news from Gary Feldbaum

The rate for hotel rooms for Philcon 2010 has been reduced

The new rate is $119. This rate will apply whether there are 1, 2, 3
or 4 people registered to the room.

The rates for suites remain the same.

It make take a day or two before the hotel's reservation system shows
the new rates.

If you already made a reservation in the Philcon Hotel block, your
rate will be decreased automatically.

If you made a reservation outside the Philcon block at a rate which
was greater than $119, the hotel will not decrease your rate unless
you cancel the original reservation and make a new reservation ( or
ask the operator at the reservation service to do this for you).

If you already made a reservation at $119 or less, please let us know,
so we can claim credit for your hotel nights.

We will be announcing this rate change on the website and via other
appropriate means.

It is important that we get the number of reservations up as quickly
as possible.
